If you have answered yes to any of the above, we would love to hear from you as creating income generating portfolios is an area we particularly specialise in.
Investing for income is a specialist area of its own and often involves the use of specialist assets such as corporate or government bonds, PIBS (Permanent Interest Bearing Shares) issued by Building Societies and Structured Products as well as more ‘mainstream’ assets such as fixed rate deposits and collective investment funds or investment trusts.
Creating the ideal income generating portfolio for you will include careful consideration of, amongst other factors; the amount that you have available to invest, the currency(s), your time horizon (5 years or more is recommended), your attitude to investment risk, frequency of payments desired (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual income) and also your tax status and how any potential tax due might be eliminated or at least reduced. Consideration will also need to be given to ensure provisions are made to protect your nest egg from any avoidable Inheritance Tax in the future for your heirs.
Take the example of Mr and Mrs Bevan, recently retired British expats living in Southern France:
Following their retirement Mr and Mrs Bevan recently moved to their holiday home in France taking up permanent residency in the process. After setting aside a sensible amount to act as a liquid emergency fund, they were left with a sum of £200,000 for medium term investment (5 years). They wanted to generate an additional income to support their pensions and also to protect their money from inflation as they hoped to leave the majority of the money for their two children. Neither of them have ever considered themselves ‘gamblers’ and wanted to take a very conservative approach to risk, they also wanted to make sure they could retain access to a good percentage of the fund in case their plans changed, for example if they decided to return to the UK or wanted to help their children or grandchildren.
After careful consideration of their needs and requirements, we created a diversified portfolio making use of a wide range of income generating assets. The portfolio pays a fixed return of 6% and is expected to grow the underlying capital by a further 1-2% per year in order to protect their nest egg from the effects inflation over the next 5 years.
